Importance of the Interrelationships of Species in the Ecosystem
If you really want to know why there is need to have a good ecological balance, then you need to have the knowledge about how all forms of life are interconnected to each other. First of all you need to realize that all forms of life depend on nature and therefore there is need to ensure that we protect Mother Nature in all ways possible. It is from the environment that humans and animals obtain their food and water which are both critical for our survival and existence.
Additionally, we obtain the air that we breathe in from the environment. This means that we need to conserve and protect our environment. Plants to depend on us for the air that they take in which is used to produce food and in so doing they help to clean the environment from high concentration of carbon dioxide which has severe consequences in the environment.
To get this kind of knowledge and much more, then you need to study about ecology. You do not necessarily have to study it as a course. There are many documentaries which have been produced on the subject and you could take some time to watch them. You can also get much information from books and also online.
Indication of Healthy Habitats Condition for Wildlife
If you love outdoor activities, then you can visit parks, conservation reserve & facilities etc. Such a visit that I undertook last year helped me to get more insight about the environment. I had been invited by a friend to join a group of their class on a weekend as they visited a conservation park to study the relationship of various species and the environment.
Although the primary purpose of the excursion was to study, I was interested because I knew that I would have an adventurous weekend. Indeed it was a good adventure and the experience was amazing. However, I not only enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and scenic attractions at the park, but I learnt a lot. As we went from place to place making observations, the group would take time to make notes and discuss some impacts about the endangered species.
One thing which I found quiet interesting was learning about dragonflies. While they were discussing about the availability of fresh water which was critical for the survival of some species, and also an indication of the availability of fresh waters animals, they mentioned how the presence of dragonflies indicated that there was freshwater in the surrounding.
Dragonflies usually breed and spend most of their time in aquatic environments. Therefore, we took several hours as we tried to analyze the population of dragonflies in the park. The population wasn’t such high and we had to talk to our guide about it.
Ecological Impacts of Human Activities in the Environment
The guide explained to us that there had been some cases of water contamination which had occurred as polluted water was being swept into the rives by rain, but they had undertaken the task of sensitizing the local community about the impact of fertilizers and other pesticides which were used in farms and would be later washed into the rivers.
Such contamination is a bigger threat to wildlife because most wildlife species depend on water, and its pollution could be detrimental to their existence. This applies to both aquatic life as well as other animals which live on land but usually depend on water for drinking. We therefore need to be aware of the potential risk of water pollution which usually occurs as a result of excessive use of agricultural nutrients and pesticides, or release of factories’ waste products to water bodies.
The presence of clean water means that the environment is healthy which does not only support animals but also plants. Indigenous vegetation usually requires the presence of clean water and also oxygen. We should strive to ensure that clean water is available because we too depend on plants. There are also many species whose natural habitats are vegetation. If such species are to survive, then good vegetation covers should be available.
It was really exciting for me to learn all that and also to realize the importance of conserving the environment. I realized that for that balance to be achieved, then I to played a huge role in ensuring that I should not recklessly upset the natural habitats that wild life lives in. it takes me and you to ensure that human activities do not distort the natural order of the environment.
